Choosing a worthwhile role
A useful role has clear tasks, supervision, learning value and realistic time expectations. Gallery invigilation, install support, public programs, archives, festivals and artist-run spaces can all teach different skills.
Ask what you will learn and who will supervise you. Vague roles can become unpaid admin with little development.
Balancing benefit and fairness
Unpaid work should not replace paid work. If a role has fixed hours, commercial value, high responsibility or no learning component, question whether it should be paid.
Students should understand university placement requirements, insurance and supervision responsibilities before starting.
Turning experience into career value
Keep a record of exhibitions, duties, skills and contacts. Ask for a reference or LinkedIn recommendation if appropriate. Reflect on what kind of arts work you enjoy: curatorial, public programs, install, registration, education, writing, operations or development.
